time spent

time spent

I discovered the bones of you

alone in the windswept dust

surrounded by the sadness and stark

they lay there, neatly

fastidiously hovering unburied

as if the wolves had just picked you dry.

the cracked and faded corner

of a sepia-toned memory

of the time spent together

in another lifetime

tickled a reticent tune

out of your ribs

like a crumbling keyboard on a baby grand

but that, too, was swiftly

washed away by the merciless wind

and all that was left to hear

was the creaking of a failing

Erard square action

the resonance of a memory

soon to be dragged out to sea

by the tendrils of history’s undertow

I discovered the bones of you there

and as dawn arrived in a

red bloom

my fire died

and along with it

the act of tribute
